Did you know there is a "cut and paste" tool that can be used for DNA editing? CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) consists of two components; the Cas9 protein that can cut DNA and the guide RNA that can recognise the sequence of DNA to be edited. Nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA, are distributed throughout a CRISPR region and spacers, sections of DNA, are interspersed among these repeated sequences. In essence, CRISPR allows control over which genes get expressed and in theory offers the ability to delete undesirable traits and add desirable traits from animals, plants and humans with extreme precision.
